Retirement – a time we all eagerly await. But stepping into it can be a bit scary, especially with an ever-changing economic landscape. So, CAAT’s Lead Pension Educator, Steve Hyland hit the street to chat with fellow Canadians about how they are feeling about retirement, and what he found was a mix of emotions.

The Canadian retirement landscape

As you saw in the video, retirement for Canadians can be a scary or uncertain topic without a financial plan or income security. And unfortunately, this is a concern for many Canadians – including the four million Canadians that are set to retire in the next five years. This means a growing number of people need a steady source of retirement income. Unfortunately, not enough have access to one.

This is where defined benefit pensions come in.

The case for pensions

Defined benefit pensions offer an effective and less stressful way for Canadians to save for retirement while they work. With a DB pension, you receive steady lifetime monthly pension payments, so you don’t have to worry about running out of money as you get older. Your employer also contributes, so you don’t have to save all on your own. And even in periods of market volatility, you can maintain a sense of security and financial stability knowing your investments are managed by experts.

So why can’t more Canadians have access to a defined benefit pension? With CAAT, now they can. As the only pension plan open to all workplaces in any industry – public or private, we’re on a mission to expand DB pension access across Canada.
