Retired Member Newsletter Summer 2025
Good news: More protection for your loved ones
In retirement, income security applies both to your pension, and to what you can leave behind to those who matter most to you.
Effective May 28, 2025, we enhanced your pension to offer even greater protection for your loved ones.
Here’s what’s new:
180-Month Minimum Payment Guarantee: CAAT has increased the minimum payment guarantee from 60 times your original monthly lifetime payment to 180 times this amount at no additional cost to you. The change is automatic, and no action is required. This applies if you are alive on or after May 28, 2025. It does not apply to survivor pensions already in pay prior to May 28, 2025.
The pension guarantee is simply a guarantee that the pension payments paid to you and your survivors will total at least 180 times the amount of your first monthly lifetime pension payment.
This means that if you pass away early in retirement, your loved ones will continue to receive your monthly pension payments until the total amount paid, between what you received and what they receive, equals the value of 180 monthly payments.
Keep CAAT up to date
It’s important to keep your beneficiary information up to date, including secondary beneficiaries. A secondary beneficiary is the person who will receive your pension benefits if your primary beneficiary is no longer living or able to accept them. You can do this by logging onto My Pension, by calling Member Services, or using the change form on our website.

Protect yourself from scams and fraud
You’ve worked hard for your pension security in retirement. Unfortunately, scammers often target retirees, knowing they may have a stable income and savings. Staying informed is your best defense.
Common scams include phone calls from fake Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) agents, emails pretending to be from your bank or pension provider, and online “investment opportunities” that promise high returns. Some scammers even pose as romantic interests or long-lost relatives to gain your trust.
Watch for red flags like urgent requests for money, threats of legal action, or demands for personal information. If something feels off, it probably is.
Here are a few simple ways to protect yourself:
- Never share your Social Insurance Number, banking details, or passwords over the phone or email.
- Be cautious of unsolicited messages or calls. You can hang up and block the contact.
- Use strong passwords and update them regularly or use a password manager.
- Enable MFA on all online accounts and digital devices. Learn more about how to set up MFA on My Pension.
What to do if you’ve been targeted
If you think you’ve been targeted by a scam, you’re not alone. Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and your local police. If your pension information may have been compromised, reach out to CAAT right away. If your email was compromised as part of a larger data breach, please update your password immediately.
Staying alert and informed helps protect your finances and your peace of mind. Being aware of scams is a great first step to protecting yourself.
