Plan enhancements with your loved ones in mind

Good news! Your pension now offers more options and stronger protection, not just for your retirement, but for the people you care about most. And we’ve heard from many members that protecting loved ones is a top priority.

As of May 28, 2025, we introduced two new enhancements, thanks to CAAT’s strong financial position, currently funded at 124%. I was pleased to announce these changes earlier this year at our Annual Performance Update event, and now they’re officially in place to support you and your loved ones.

You've worked hard to build your lifetime benefit—and with the new 180-month minimum payment guarantee, you can feel confident knowing it will continue to provide financial security to your loved ones, even if you pass away early in retirement. This new guarantee extends the previous 60-month minimum payment guarantee, offering more support to those who matter most to you.

Essentially, it ensures that if you pass away early, pension payments made to your survivors will total at least 180 times the amount of your first monthly lifetime pension payment. This added security comes at no extra cost and applies to you if you are a CAAT Pension Plan member on or after May 28, 2025. It does not apply to survivor pensions already in pay.

If you have a spouse, you can now customize their survivor pension to better fit your needs. By default, your eligible spouse receives 60% of your pension for life when you pass away in retirement.

Now, you have the option to increase their survivor pension to 100% or choose the existing 75% option. This gives you greater choice to protect your spouse with a full pension for life. Choosing either the 75% or 100% option will result in an actuarially reduced pension, and the reduction is permanent. This option is available to you if you retire on or after May 28, 2025.
