What is a designated beneficiary?
Regardless of your marital status, you can designate someone other than your spouse who may also be entitled to a benefit. This ensures that your retirement benefits will be paid according to your wishes if you die before retirement.
Designate a beneficiary
You must notify the Plan of a change of beneficiary by sending us the completed Request for Change of Retired Participants or Surviving Spouses form directly, or by contacting the Plan by telephone. You can designate anyone you want as beneficiary; it can be a friend, your children, or even a charity. If you want to designate more than one beneficiary, indicate, for each beneficiary, the percentage allocation of any benefits. If your marital status has changed due to separation or divorce, see the page Separation or divorce to find out the procedure to follow if the competent authority for your employment was Ontario.
